Su-27 Hasegawa
After extensive analysis of the Hasegawa tooling we would have to reluctantly concur with Ken Duffey regarding the size of the empenage: it is indeed too wide by approx 3.5mm. This is a crying shame as the Hasegawa kit is by far the most refined and accurate of all the Flanker kits apart from this. In spite of this serious error, we still recommend the kit as the best starting point for any Flanker except the Su-32/34 variant. It just means the modeller will have to cut down the empenage to the correct width. We recommend this model because it has a very good rendition of the intakes, well reproduced flying surfaces, and is the only kit to sport a canopy with the correct under-cut cross section. In spite of differing opinions we feel (after having checked with scaled photos) that the nose is the correct width and depth, needing only slight adjustment of the top curve contour, which is too pronounced. Hasegawa chose this kit as one of their first forays into 'multi-media' by casting the seat and undercarriage in white metal and including photo-etched parts. They are the best metal castings we have ever seen, but doing so blew the price of the kit into orbit. The Dragon re-release is far better value for money; all the metal being replaced with polystyrene. Su-27UB Heller 80371

Su-33 Italeri 197
This kit is an expremely poor rendition which was rushed out, having half-hearted parts for the canard area that are a sort of 'tack-on' variety, and do nothing to portray the real thing in the correct manner. One would do better to steal from the Su-32/34 kit as this has a much more accurate rendition of the relevant parts, although it still lacks streamlining at the leading edge where it meets the wing. It has been extremely difficult to ascertain the precise shape of the real thing due to a lack of accurate drawings. We have cross checked a number of references, even scaling up photos showing silhouettes at the correct angle. All the drawings conflict with each other, even ones published by Sukhoi themselves. Until such time as definitive information becomes available, one will have to settle for 'an impression' of the Flanker. We feel there is room in the market for a truly accurate, definitive Flanker, perhaps by Tamiya. If you feel the same way, please sign our petition.
