Kit Review
Airfix tooling
Parts include optional intakes and wingtips for either the Jet Provost or Strikemaster, as well as a separate clear part for nose light visor, wingtip tanks, 4 small bombs, and 2 underwing tanks. A separate canopy and windscreen is included. The kit features fine sharp wing trailing edges, proving that scale surfaces were not beyond the capability of injection moulding technology even 30 years ago. Comparison with published drawings reveal that the drawings themselves are in many ways less accurate than the kit! All drawings listed below depict the fuselage as 140mm in length, which is too short; the correct length being 142.6mm. The Aviation News drawings depict the fuselage as being far too narrow around the cockpit area.
The kit has raised panel lines, and the fuselage is over-length by 1mm. The wing join tabs interfere with the depth of the main wheel wells, and will need to be cut back if the main doors are to be shown open. Ribbing on the tail rudder does not match up side-to-side. The canopy is inaccurate. When viewed side-on, it is too bulged or kinked at the rear where it meets the fuselage, and should be an un-broken concave curved line. Rear canopy frame should be completely vertical, not sloped back. The Aeroclub canopy has a good cross section, but is even less accurate in side-on view. The Jet Provost and Strikemaster boxings are identical toolings. The Matchbox tooling is not worth considering as it is far less accurate than the Airfix one.
