Kit Reviews
An-26 Russian Project 0201 Injection-moulded in 'cream trifle' coloured plastic to limited-run standard with flash and very crude joins. The moulds have been hand-made and reflect that through very poor parts fit and a lack of refinement in surface finish. Flash is thick. The fuselage cross-section is not symmetrical. The join between the flying surface halves is very poor, resulting in a pronounced and excessive gap at the trailing edge. Considerable sanding of the interior surfaces on a flat surface will be needed to overcome this. All flying surfaces in our sample were warped. There is noticeable variation in the size and symmetry of the engine nacelles in cross section. This kit will require similar work to a vacform in preparation of the parts for assembly, although the thick plastic is very robust so requires no bolstering unlike a vacform. The wing join slot is the most arduous task, requiring a Dremel to open or a considerable amount of time with a scalpal and files. The rear fuselage is moulded as separate halves from the main fuselage, presumably to allow for alternative versions. The joint is very crude and will need considerable care and work to align and disguise. A small set of photo-etched parts is included. The transparencies are very crude and in need of replacement. The panel lines are suitably modest. Rudimentary internal detail is provided; these parts are best replaced with plastic card and scratch-built items. A separate component for the rear ramp is provided, allowing for a ramp-down pose. Wheels are very crude and best relaced, as are the propeller blades. The decals provided allow for 3 different schemes of the Soviet Air Force: two camouflaged ones, and a plain grey scheme. A respectable amount of data stencilling is included, but the carrier film of the decals had yellowed in our sample. The greatest virtue of this kit is the valuable diagrams of detail structures found on the the real aircraft included in the instructions. These diagrams cover the front and rear undercarriage, crew escape hatch, and turbo prop engine installation. The paint scheme diagrams appear to portray the aircraft accurately, thus being of considerable assistance to those with limited access to reliable reference material on this type. We cannot comment definitively on the accuracy of this model, but believe it to be of superior quality to the Sanger offering based on our experience with Sanger's IL-76, however if either Roden or Trumpeter were to release a kit of this aircraft, Russian Project's would easily be outclassed. We consider this kit to be at the bottom of the ladder as far as value for money is concerned. Recommended only to those who can't stand the thought of a kit falling together with a minimum of effort, or to those who are not prepared to wait for a better kit. The Sanger and Russian Project kits are the only ones available in any of the main modelling scales. (The only other one is 1/288.)
An-74 Toko 102 Injection-moulded in mid-grey plastic. Initial impression is of a crisp, well-featured kit with raised panel lines, similar to a late-generation Airfix kit. It has separate radome with radar, separate hinging control surfaces, separate rubber tyres, optional open engine service hatches, opening rear doors, and is one of the few transport kits to truly acknowledge the nature of its subject by including parts for a full cabin interior. Overall shape appears to be very accurate; however, the kit is marred by bad parts fit when it comes to smaller components. The nacelle-to-wing fit is very bad. The main service hatches on nacelle are not compound-curved in cross section (they are constant cross-section) and so interrupt the flow of the nacelle's shape. The circumference of one nacelle does not match its main hatches resulting in pronounced misfit. A minor service hatch on one nacelle has latches scribed at the top instead of the bottom. The intake lips do not fair smoothly into their respective nacelles. Hinge lines for the elevators are incorrectly located. The hinge troughs for the rudder require enlarging for the hinge to move correctly. The hinge for the ailerons is misaligned and the chord of the ailerons is too large to fit the apperture. Correction of this to allow the hinging mechanism to operate will require a considerable amount of time and patience; things we did not have for this review, resulting in the ailerons being left off for the photo shoot. The tailfin warped to starboard slightly. Despite its drawbacks, we like this kit and feel that its engineering gives it alot of potential for superdetailing. All the negatives are easily surmountable. This tooling is the only one available in any of the main modelling scales. (The only other one is 1/288.)
